I'm writing this complaint about Doctor Kevin P Murphy and Doctor Gavin P Duffy of Southeast Orthopedic Specialist of Jacksonville, Florida because of several different occurrences and observations I’ve made over the past several months dealing with my Shoulder injuries and the other orthopedic injuries of family and friends. My complaint started several months ago when I went to the Emergency Room at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville Florida. I visited the ER after I had a personal injury to my left shoulder during a company sponsored flag football game.I knew immediately my shoulder had to be injured because of the pain, but I didn’t know exactly how bad it was until later that night. Due to that pain I was experiencing in my shoulder, I didn’t realize my knee had suffered any damage until I was home and sitting on the couch. My knee started hurting and it felt like someone was stabbing me in the side of my knee with a knife. At this point I knew I had to go to the ER.After visiting the Emergency Room at St Vincent’s Hospital and having some X-rays taken, I was told nothing was broken and that I may have a rotator cuff issue. I was instructed to Ice both my Knee and my Shoulder and set a follow up appointment with Southeast Orthopedic Specialists (SE-ORTHO).I was referred to see Doctor Kevin P Murphy for both my shoulder and my knee. I was told not to worry because he specialized in Shoulders and Knee Injuries in Jacksonville. After setting my appointment, my first observation that bothered me was when I was sitting in the waiting room. Their office appeared nice and comfortable at first glance but upon closer examination the furniture was dusty and the magazines were dirty and old which made me wonder if the rest of the clinic was dirty too. If the furniture is dusty that means it hadn't been wiped down every day like a Doctor's office should be to keep germs down. The waiting room, examination rooms and bathrooms should be sterilized daily at any type health facility that's just common knowledge.I arrived at my appointment 15 minutes early to get paperwork completed and verify my insurance was active and to pay my co-pay. After an hour and a half past my appointment time, I was finally led back to a small typical room with no windows and just a door, sink and a medical exam table. As I sat there alone waiting some more I remember thinking to myself "Am I witnessing the side effects of Obamacare?"I started getting nervous on top of being frustrated so I tried to calm myself by rationalizing what I was experiencing by thinking maybe they are just shorthanded this week.It was another 15 minutes and Doctor Kevin P Murphy MD shows up and asks me a series of questions and recommends I have an MRI done on my shoulder and knee. It took over 1 week to get a referral to get an MRI facility and then 3 more days for Advanced Diagnostics (the MRI Company) to fit me in. I finally got my MRI results back and by now I’ve been injured over 2 weeks and it took another 4 days to get an appointment to see Dr. Kevin P Murphy. Here is where my shoulder injury situation went from bad to worse. Apparently at Southeast Orthopedic Specialist (SE-ORTHO) they don’t schedule their doctor’s vacations around the medical needs of patients. I understand this but it is disturbing when the bedside manners of the doctors are so completely different. I could tell within the first 3 minutes in the exam room with Doctor Gavin P Duffy of Southeast Orthopedic Specialist in Jacksonville, Florida that the doctors in this practice have an internal rivalry and competition of some sort but wasn’t clear as to what the "game" their competition was over. Doctor Gavin P Duffy sensed I was nervous due to my line of questions about the clinic and where Dr. Kevin P Murphy was and why I had to spend my time going over all the same information with a different doctor.Dr. Gavin Duffy decided to go over his education and was proud to have studied in Ireland. He discussed his experience level and clinical qualifications and went on to say he does more surgeries that most of the other doctors. (I instantly felt uncomfortable)I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Was this Doctor, specifically a Personal Injury Orthopedic Surgeon, bragging that he had "Cut" more people in a year than most surgeons do in a few years? I think he was trying to impress me with his high surgery rate but it actually did the exact opposite. By nature I am a trusting person and love the connection with other humans, but this guy gave me bad vibes. First we had not determined if I was a candidate for surgery and no one had reviewed my MRI results. I Mean come on at least look at my MRI before telling me that I needed surgery. In my mind I am thinking... does this guy have x-ray vision? Why is he telling me how many people he cuts? I am thinking he knows something about my injury he isn’t telling me. I ask him to explain himself and he admitted he had not reviewed my MRI yet because he was over worked covering for Dr. Kevin Murphy and dealing with his own patients too. This led me to believe that surgery was already in his mind for the solution to my orthopedic injuries without really discussing my options first. I've been in pain for 3 weeks now, and had been recommended to this clinic by the Doctors at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Riverside area of Jacksonville, Florida to go to Southeast Orthopedic Specialist. I decided to trust Doctor Gavin P Duffy to proceed and schedule me for an appointment to review my MRI results and see what damage was there. My knee seemed to be doing better but my shoulder still had sharp pain. I am a young adult American male 28 in excellent shape. I surf, play sports and lift weights on a regular basis, so overall relatively healthy. I don’t smoke or do drugs, an occasional beer but overall good health and in good shape. When I heard the word surgery I was instantly thinking about all the things I do in life that I would not be able to do again and became nervous about the quality of life I would have. I left the Southeast orthopedic clinic office in Jacksonville Florida thinking that I needed to do more research on the injury and the history of Dr. Gavin Duffy. Obviously the first thing I did was google shoulder injuries and watched videos and read every article I could find about the shoulder and the parts of the shoulder. If I was going to be faced with surgery for the first time in my life I needed to have more details on what I was facing. It did seem like a routine surgery and not as many complications as a transplant or other "Major" surgery. I admit I felt a lot better seeing that it was a common orthopedic surgery. I did read about the risk of infection with any surgery and remembered the dirty chairs and dirty lobby that SE Orthopedic specialist had in their clinic. We expect a clean environment in and orthopedic doctor’s office, or any doctor’s office for that matter.I continued to investigate further as I was on a timeline now and had to research shoulder surgery and orthopedic procedures and try to find some actual patients who would give me their real life experience. So with the age of technology and Social Media, I asked by connections for recommendations and any help or input they could share. What I found out was next to horrific and downright scary and ultimately the reason I decided to write this on pissed consumer. The more people that I spoke to the more issues I uncovered.I discovered that many of my friends had been to this clinic and had actually been in their words "the victim" of Dr. Duffy at Southeast Orthopedic specialist. Four of the their past patients that I spoke to had gotten an infection from a surgery that Doctor Gavin Duffy performed and one of those is currently seeking legal action against the SE-ORTHO clinic and Dr. Duffy.I researched Dr. Duffy further and turns out he was right graduated medical school in Dublin Ireland but didn’t even go to school in the United States which I saw as another warning sign. I tried to find reviews but the ones I could find weren't much help.Another Warning sign these guys are not trust worthy. The southeast Orthopedic group recently added another doctor to their list who claims to be a "Trauma" specialist Named Doctor Farid Hakim MD. The research on him shows he is a general orthopedic surgeon and doesn’t have the experience he claims to have. He was brought to their group to develop the trauma department, yet he has no record of having done a trauma fellowship. The Clinic's website www.se-ortho.com has him listed as a trauma specialist and as far as the health department records indicate he spent the last 20 years working locally as a Doctor, but not performing any trauma related surgery. I do not think Doctors and other professionals should be allowed to put "False advertising and fake Profiles". The information they put out that is not true and should be considered misconducts and an ethics violation. This whole organization seems to have ethic issues. These guys used to all work together in Jacksonville Florida under the name Heekin Orthopedic institute. I spoke to a woman who used to work there,( who asked to remain anonymous for obvious reasons)and the rumor is that Dr Heekin was tired of these other doctors ruining his good name and reputation and left and took his name with him and told the "Bad" doctors that they needed to get their own business name and start their own practice. While doing my research I came across another group of orthopedic surgeons who I made an appointment to get another opinion on my shoulder and to see if I needed cut. Keep in mind I’m over 3 weeks into the injury and recovery process. The new doctor looked at my MRI, had me do some physical testing and asked me a series of lifestyle questions determined that I had two options. I could do the surgery but with no guarantees of being able to still do some of my physical activities to the same level or option two was to try physical therapy and strengthening the affected muscles, ligaments and tendons.I chose option 2 the rehab. I have been very happy and recovered what seems to be 100% without the need to be cut or open my skin to outside infection or any other post-surgery concerns. In conclusion to this event happening to me in my life, It has opened my eyes to the realization that there are doctors out there that are more interested in billing your insurance company for as much as they can by performing unnecessary surgery as the course of treatment rather than what may be best for you. During my research I discovered that there is a dentist name Dr. Snyder who has multiple lawsuits pending for pulling out almost all of small children's baby teeth when only one was bothering them and billing Medicaid. If you have had an orthopedic Injury in Jacksonville, Fl. and it requires surgery please do yourself a favor and get a second opinion. If you have that feeling something isn't right, It most likely isn't especially at SE-ORTHO
Agreed. Diane was very horrible and incompetent.
My Doctor had to intervene and said, "that woman is full of herself and giving wrong medical advice". Diane refused to answer a simple question about a procedure by talking over me, raising her voice, lied to my doctor and directed me to medical treatments that were unnecessary.
